Typhoon Soudelor

It's with a very heavy heart that I'm writing this post.

As the nation gets into full swing to celebrate Singapore's 50th Jubilee, Taiwan is currently dealing with Typhoon Soudelor.

We are deeply concerned with our friends & students in Taiwan. It's especially heart-wrenching to see the photos of the destruction that Typhoon Soudelor has caused to the property of our Taiwanese friend.

This is the temple where Teacher Jerry went for the 1st ever 21 KM Half-marathon run organised by them in April 2014. We felt very connected with the temple and the deity 三太子. This was the 三太子 who ran the whole of Taiwan & took part in the Tokyo marathon.

It is very sad to know that our friend and his family lost everything overnight due to the typhoon. It is an emotional day for us.

Typhoon Soudelor taught us a very valuable lesson. Life is vulnerable. Treasure every moment, every second. This second you might have everything, the very next second, you might just lose everything. As we look around us, we should always remain thankful and grateful.

We should be thankful that we do not have typhoon, earthquakes or serious floods in Singapore. Our Taiwanese friends are currently dealing with the aftermath of the typhoon & we pray for their safety.

Project Press On - A Y3 Raffles Girls School CmPS Project

They are Project (de)PRESS(i)ON, a Community Problem Solving Team (CmPS) from Raffles Girls’ School (Secondary).

They are concerned about the rising number of people suffering from dysthymia (mild depression) and one of our aims is to spread awareness about the causes, symptoms, treatments and prevention of depression. Their target audience is 12 - 16 year old students and they hope to educate them on this escalating problem of dysthymia, allowing them to be better informed on prevention measures.

They visited the class to give out self-designed badges which have motivational quotes on them. They hope that through this, they will brighten up the students’ days and motivate them to work hard!

Happy 6th Month Olympia

Dear Olympia,

Today marks your 6th month with us!

Thank you for being part of our lives, for being our daughter.

The past 6 months being your father has been an awesome experience and we experienced many many firsts together.

Papa prepared a simple video for you. Hope you like it.

An emotional month

It hasn't been an easy month for the family especially with the demise of my beloved mother-in-law.

The family is coping well and life is back to norm. Thank you everyone for all your condolences and understanding.

Life is full of ups and downs. Life is a celebration of a new chapter and the last page.

As a coach, I am learning everyday from students, coaches, mentors and Olympia.

As a father, I am learning everyday too. Learning new nursery rhymes, sourcing for the most suitable toys, reading new books to her etc. And how apt, I chanced upon this video.

The first 1 min 12 secs of this video touched me. (Might need to view it on youtube)

Dear Olympia,

Sports is not all about winning or losing. Sportsmanship is the fundamental of all sports. The difference between an athlete who earns respect from others and an athlete who doesn't all boils down to the value of sportsmanship.

If you display poor sportsmanship, even if you win, all you win will be just a piece of medal or a trophy but not the respect of others.

If you display good sportsmanship, even before the race ends, you are a winner in everyone's heart.

Keep that in mind, my daughter.

If we win, we must remain humble and encourage others to perform better. If we fail, we must congratulate the winners because that tells us that they train way harder than us.

56th National Primary Schools Swimming Championship

Firstly, congratulations to all our swimmers who had represented their schools for the recent 56th National Schools Swimming Championship held at the Singapore Sports School.

We are very proud that everyone of you broke your personal best records! Keep it up!

It was also Olympia's first time at a Swimming Championship!

It was nice seeing Kerstin at the Sports School. I am glad that she's still fighting hard for her dreams! Keep going and you will succeed one day, Kerstin! Gosh, it's been 12 years since I taught her how to swim. How time flies!

6th SSPA Centralised Test 18th April 2015

Dear Students & Parents,

Attached is the 6th SSPA Centralised Test Start List.

The “estimated” start time is indicated on each of the event, swimmers are to report to the Clerk of Course (CoC) 20 minutes before the start of each event BUT it is advisable for you to be early for reporting. The Clerk of Course desk (CoC) is located at the left hand side of the viewing gallery (facing the gallery, please refer to attached map).

The Competition Pool will be available for warm-up from 9:30 to 10:00am and 2 lanes at the Toa Payoh Public Pool are available for warm-up and warm-down from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Parents are advised to supervise their swimmers/children during warm-up and warm-down at both pools.

For Safety reason,  Please take note that PLUNGING PRACTICES ARE ONLY TO BE DONE AT COMPETITION POOL and NO PLUNGING is ALLOWED AT THE PUBLIC POOL, the 2 lanes in the Toa Payoh Public Pool are strictly for warm-up and warm-down cycle swim. Appreciate your compliance.

Please be informed that swimmers are to wear proper swim attire (only one is allowed)so that it will enhance their swim and timing.

Please also remind that the starting protocol during the test is:

-          Short series of whistle from Referee is for swimmers to remove clothing eg T-shirt, track pants etc and stand-by to race.
-          Long Whistle from Referee, swimmer has to take up position on either at the Starting block or at the bulk head. Please note that for Back Stroke event, the FIRST long whistle is for the swimmer to take up position in the water , the SECOND long whistle is to take up the starting position.
-          Once all swimmers are ready, the Referee will hand the Swimmers over to the Starter. The Starter will give the command “Take your Marks”
-          Swimmer must remain stationery (no movement)
-          Once all swimmers are stationery and ready, the starter will trigger the start device.

I noticed that most of the DQs in the past Centralised SSPA Tests are from Breast Stroke events, the most common ones are:
·         Did not turn or finish with both hands simultaneously
·         Head did not break surface after the arms turn inwards at the widest part of the second  arm stroke (during the start or turn)
·         Arms push beyond the hip while swimming

Please note that due to security and limited accessibility to Toa Payoh COE Competition Pool, the access route to the COE Competition Pool is via the Toa Payoh Public Pool Main Entrance.

Let the duty officer or SS staff knows that you are here for the SSPA Test.

All the best and good luck to all!

What my 4 month old baby taught me...

What my 4-month old baby taught me about - Determination.

Dear Olympia,

You tried flipping on your tummy for a good three days.
You turned your body to the side and could not proceed on.
You cried.

At times, Papa gave you a little push,
You were on your tummy but you still cried.

At times, Papa flipped you so that you can rest on your tummy.
You still cried.

It seemed like, you were determined to flip with your own effort.

The first thing you did when you were awake, you tried flipping.

After you were done with your milk, you tried flipping.

When you were asleep, you tried flipping in your sleep again.

Papa & Mama kept telling you to take your time & take it easy.
Yet, you showed us your determination to achieve your flip throughout those 3 days.

Papa was so worried that I might miss out on your successful flip.

That moment when I entered the bedroom and witnessed your flip together with mama, I was overjoyed.
We punched our fists into the air, cheered, clapped & celebrated your success together so loud that you cried.
We were very proud of your achievement.

And yes, now you like sleeping on your tummy.
Papa & Mama will just have to take more precaution and care.

Thank you Olympia for reminding and showing us what determination is.
Keep that fighting spirit going on!

Lots of love,

Olympia 1st Trip to Thailand

Dear Olympia, your 1st overseas holiday was to Bangkok, Thailand. Papa & Mama wanted to bring you there to give thanks and also to let you meet our Thai family. Everyone loves you to the max! Blessed with all the love, we hope you will grow up well.

The trip started out really well when the good folks at Changi Airport decided to give you a Patrick soft toy!

You were really well behaved during both legs of the flight! Or should we say, throughout the whole trip!?

Giving thanks to Phra phrom at Erwan Shine. Thank you for everything.

Thank you to P'Nuch for driving us all the way from Bangkok to Wat Sothon.

Wat Sothon Wararam was built in the late Ayutthaya Period during the reign of King Narai the Great, with its original name being Wat Hong. The temple houses Phra Phutthasothon, a much-revered Buddha image of Chachoengsao created by a craftsman from Lanchang. The image sits in the meditation position and is 1.65 meters in width and 1.48 meters in height.

Legend has it that three Buddha images were floating down a river. The first image was found on the Mae Klong River, placed at Wat Phet Samut and named Luangpho Ban Laem. The second image, Luangpho Sothon, was placed at Wat Hong or currently known as Wat Sothon Wararam. The last image, Luangpho To, was placed at Wat Bang Phli Yai Nai or also called Wat Phlapphla Chai Chana Songkhram.

And the must-visit-to-make-merit temple for us - Wat Arun. A very hot day!

Your 1st visit to Chatuchak market! 1 of our favourite markets!

And you surprised us by swimming 4 laps back at the hotel swimming pool! Woo Hoo~~~!!!

What's a visit to Thailand without taking the Tuk Tuk?! Here's your 1st ride on a Tuk Tuk!

Despite the scorching weather, you didn't fuss as much as we were expecting. Maybe it's because of the temples we visited, maybe it's because of the number of ice packs your mum had prepared or maybe you were being cooperative with us or maybe your parents are just so cool.

Whatever it was, you are really a sweetie to behave so well during the whole trip. More trips to come!

We've built a nation with our hands
The toil of people from a dozen lands
Strangers when we first began, now we're Singaporean
Let's reach out for Singapore, join our hands forevermore

One people, one nation, one Singapore
That's the way that we will be forevermore
Every creed and every race, has it's role and has it's place
One people, one nation, one Singapore

And when the time comes for the test
Our vigilance will never rest
We'll be united, hand in hand
We'll show the world just where we stand
And reach out for Singapore, join our hands forevermore

(Repeat Chorus x 2)

One people, one nation, one Singapore

Overseas Students & Olympia

Hello everyone!

I have been extremely busy since December and finally I manage to find some time to blog. I know, I know. Everyone's waiting for the photos! Haha.

Been busy with my overseas students (some who flew to Singapore specially to have lessons with me) and I'm very grateful for that. Oh yes, and also busy taking care of Olympia!

First up, some of my overseas students.

Jacob & Victor from Norway

Eliza, Charlie & Kyra from Holland

2 years old from Russia

Diane & hubby from Germany & Romania

Every student has a special story to tell and I would love to share when I've even more time. I just want to give a big shout out to all my international students. Be it, you flying to Singapore for lessons or me travelling to your country, THANK YOU for your faith, trust and support in me.

Without further ado, I would like to introduce Princess Olympia!

Life has been totally not the same since your arrival. I finally understand the phrase, "Children are gifts from God". When I first held you in my arms, you look like an angel. I told myself and your mama, we will teach you everything we know about life and raise you up into a fine young lady.

It's such a blessing to watch you grow up every day. Waking up to your hunger cries for milk daily at 7am, Papa no longer needs the alarm clock. Seeing you and mama beside me the first thing I open my eyes tells me that nothing is more priceless in this world.

There is this Chinese saying that daughters are the father's lover in the past."女儿是父亲前世的小情人" . If that's really true. I must have really really love you!!

Papa has been soaking in the water with you since you turned 1 month old. I hope you've been enjoying your swim sessions so far. And since there are so many aunties and uncles who wants to put their babies into the pool too after seeing what you have achieved. Mama is helping papa to arrange a free lesson for the babies!

Hoping that you become an Olympian swimmer and represent the country is our dream. But if 1 day, you decided to become a professional singer. We will support you nevertheless! Look at you! You have the pose of a singer!

This photo garnered alot of likes on facebook and mama's instagram  This is a photo that's worth remembering. We took it at East Coast Park to celebrate Valentine's Day together. We really really love your sweet smile. Such smiles will melt hearts. Our hearts have been melted.

Having a lion dance around our house during special occasions/ Chinese new year will never be the same anymore. That's because you will be part of our big family!

See how thoughtful your mama is. She's afraid you might be frightened by all the firecrackers, fireworks and the dong dong chang. She went to get you ear plugs, ear muffs! Who knows? You slept through out the whole lion dance performance! *Thumbs up*

Papa is not being spared from your mama obsession of pinks! A pink carrier!

You are growing up really fast, so fast that you no longer wear NB & S size diapers. Therefore, we took you to an Orphanage to donate them to other children who need them. Papa & Mama hope you will learn to be kind to others and give more than you receive/ will receive. Remember, Papa always tell you, you must always tell yourself “我是幸福的!”

On your 2nd visit to the orphanage. You helped Auntie Belinda, Auntie Valerie and their families donate milk powder and clothes hanger. Papa & Mama decided that we shall not throw any birthday parties for you in the future. Instead, you may use the money that was meant for your birthday to bring these children out for a day of fun. That would be very meaningful right?

Grow up well. Grow up healthily, Olympia. Your mama has been the one who's been making all the sacrifices, waking up whenever you are hungry to feed you. Bathing you whenever you complain of the weather being too hot for you. And many others... Never never stop loving her alright.

We love you, our daughter. Happy 3rd month!
