2009 Reflections

Baby Charcoal

Took Baby Charcoal out for a ride this evening. It's been a long time since I last rode him. =x As we rode, I reflected on Year 2009.
My resolution for this year was "I'm going to be the 1st Smile giver to anyone, be it a friend or a stranger." I think I had fulfilled that resolution! =) Hee....
To me, 2009 was a year full of laughter & smiles. Especially with the kids!
And talking about my kids. They really taught me a lot! I met alot of impressive & amazing kids this year. Every one of you have taught Teacher Jerry something! I Thank you all for the things I have learnt from you! =)
And Parents. Sometimes I just smiled to myself when I think of you all. This year, I have met so many wonderful parents (pls dun think I'm crapping or curry favouring). When I say wonderful, I really meant wonderful!
Like I said earlier, without your help @ Our Children Day party, it won't be a success. Also, Thank you for all the lovely Teachers' Day & Christmas Day Presents. In 2010, just draw me a card will do alright! =)
I think, most of our relationship is no longer Parent- Teacher r/s. For some, it's like Friend-Friend r/s with the constant MSN, Facebook, SMS chats. Hee... And there are some, we are like Big Sister/ Big Brother - Younger Brother R/s.
I thank you for all the lovely memories and encouragement in 2009! =)

The top picture smile was taken on 30 Dec 2008,the lower one was taken on 31 Dec 2009. Please tell me I look more cheerful & younger! Hee..
2009 was spent pretty much in the pool & due to poor self organisation, I didnt took part in any races. So, in 2010. I'm going to make doubly sure that I will take part in @ least 1 race! =)
Here's my resolution for 2010. I'm going make 2010 into a Year Of Discovery. Yes. Discovery. I'm going make myself go into discovery mode. =)
For swimming wise, Be it discover new talents/kids in swimming or to discover new ways to teach the kids.(Although now Teacher Jerry alot of patterns liaoz.. Hee) But still, I want to discover more drills, more ways to coach the kids. That's going to make lessons more interesting! =)
For personal development wise, I plan to make new discovery about the world. An overseas trip might be a good excuse. That is, if I can squeeze out the time. =p
For Investment wise, I'm going to discover new blue chips on the stock market.
And last but not least,
For training wise, I'm going to discover new routes, new races & new limits.
Well, basically, I'm just going to behave like my 5 year old kids... Keep asking Why? Why? Why? And from those Whys, I'm going to discover new grounds & new styles & new limits. =)
For now, I think I'm better off to watch Discovery Channel. Hee... =p

An Amazing Christmas

Yes.. I know this post is way overdue. But Teacher Jerry is super duper busy that 2009 will slowly creeps off and before I knew it, 2010 will come! That's fast! I haven't even have time to do my resolution reflection!

1st and foremost, Thank you dearest children and parents for your lovely and wonderful Christmas presents. For the record, this year I received the most number of Christmas presents in my 25years! You all gave me a big shock! Look at all the presents you all gave to me! Thank you!

From Daryl who almost tripped the steps cause he was so excited in passing me the present that he forgotten about the steps to Nicholas who ran all the way home just to bring my present(Yes, he ran all the way home!) & leading to an "argument" between me n Michele over the Christmas present(she wanted to give me a super duper exp present -Nokia N97!)

I'm very touched and I accept all the presents with appreciation(exp for Michele of coz.. =p)So, once again Thank you all for your lovely presents. I already know how much you all love your Teacher Jerry already! Hee... =)

But starting next year, I am going to limit the presents you all can give to Teacher Jerry liao...

Not that I dun like the presents(I love the presents! who dun love presents) but I seriously dun think I deserve to be showered with all these expensive presents..

So, starting next year, Pls save the present money k? Instead, Write me a card. Or draw me a card. That will do! I already know how much you all love and appreciate Teacher Jerry. It's already registered in my heart. =)

I'm so touched by each and everyone of you lah! You all are simply too sweet and nice! Thank You!
Ok, next is the topic that most ppl are waiting for. The Speed Date.
When I reached the venue, I hesitated for a moment and asked "why am I here?!" and strangely, sms from you guys came in... I received "Good Luck Jerry!", "Jiayou Jiayou" etc..
Hee.. So, once again, Thank u! That gave me e courage and I went for the date.
It all began quite well with the ladies sitting @ the table and the guys will rotate to the next table very 10-15mins or so.
For the 1st 4 tables, it was still fun. Yes. Fun. But soon, it began really monotonous. You just feel like you are being interviewed with the same questions over and over again. "Whats your occupation?" "Whats your hobbies?" "How old are you" "Are you over 30?" etc etc
Nevertheless, it was a good experience as most of the ladies there were teachers too. Dun ask me why so many teachers. I also dunnoe. =p
So yeah, my social circle has expended by that teeny weeny bit. =) But for the near future, I doubt I'll be attending such events again..

Friday, 25 December 2009

Thank you!

Thank u all for ur well wishes! Hee... Be it wishing Teacher Jerry Merry Christmas or sending me a "Good Luck" sms for my speed date later on.. Hee.... Thank u!

Now gotta speed off~

I think my child is not improving...

Misbehaving. Late for class. Disobedient. Talking back to teacher. Playing truant.

These are just some of the things a teacher faces in everyday teaching. But, none of these are as hurting as a simple sentence from a parent - "I think my child is not improving."

This is a story of a mum, a 3.5yr old boy and a coach.

One day. Mum brings boy to coach and say. "Can u teach my son? He's 3.5yr old this year."

Coach sees that boy's too young to learn, suggested to mum that she brings boy to play more often at the pool so that he will grow to like water.

Mum told coach that both mum and dad has water phobia, that's why never bring boy to swim before. Mum insisted to coach to teach him and says "I dun need him to learn how to swim. So long he's water confident, that's more important."

Coach hesitated but eventually accepted boy.

Boy was really afraid of water. He will scream, shout, pinch, scratch and grab coach. Coach didn't give up on him and in 3 months time, boy grew to like water and was able to submerge in water.

At this point of time, Mum came and say to coach. "I think my child is not improving." After saying this, both mum and boy disappeared for 6mths.

6mths later, miraclely, Mum and boy appeared again. Mum once again asked coach to teach boy. After 6mths, boy forgets everything and coach has to reteach everything again. Coach did not give up and suggest to mum to bring boy for extra lesson.

3mths pass again. Boy is now able to float, breath underwater, do breast stroke kicking, breast stroke arm pull. Coach is very happy because boy is showing results.

At this point of time, Mum came and say to coach. "I think my child is not improving."

Yes. You guess it. I'm the coach. When that mum says that to me recently, I felt so hurt. I dunnoe why I felt that way but, it feels so hurtful. I've put in so much efforts into coaching her son but all I get is a simple "I think my child is not improving."

That feeling is as though, You put in so much effort into cooking and preparing a nice dinner for your love one and when he comes home, without even tasting the food, tell you straight. The dinner is not nice.

Or, you put in so much time and effort into your presentation & speech. But after 10sec of presenting, your boss says. No. Your presentation is no good.

You get the kind of hurtful feeling? I admit I might not be the best possible coach you can find.

But I believe I'm definitely one of the most dedicated coaches you can ever find. I dare to say that I place in my everything into every single student under my wing. My heart, my soul, my effort, my time, my commitment, my love & my passion.

If I didn't put in so much effort, I shouldn't be feeling so hurt right? No wonder they say, Passion & career dun go well with each other. When your passion becomes a career, that passion will die off... I guess, words like these are a killer to passion.

I'm hurt by those words that's for sure. (After all, I placed in so much efforts) But that wun stop me from continuing to teach boy. And just when I needed a motivation, it just came out of nowhere. =)

I was reading Mitch Albom "Have a little faith" and in it, there's this story that motivates me so much. Here's the story.

There's this salesman, see? And he knocks on a door. The man who answers says, 'I don't need anything today.'

The next day, the salesman returns.
"Stay away!" He is told.

The next day, the salesman is back.
"The man yells, 'You again! I warned you!' He gets so angry, he spits in the salesman's face.

"The salesman smiles, wipes the spit with a handkerchief, then looks to the sky and says, 'must be raining'"

I like the attitude of that salesman.. No matter what kind of negative feedback you receive, you should always think positively. Or perhaps, sometimes, a little bit of stubbornness is all you need.

Hmmm.. No wonder most teachers are so determined and yet stubborn @ times. =p

The best way to hurt.

What's the best way to hurt a teacher/a coach?
What's ur guess?=)

My books arrived! =)

Few weeks back, I shared that I was getting books from The Book Depository. And yup! They arrived safely!! Yeah~!

Double Goal Coach is a book not found in Singapore. And a quick check with Kinokuniya and Borders, they quoted me $30++ for this book and shipping time takes 4-6weeks.

But I paid only US$29.89(SGD $42.28) for both Double Goal Coach and Have a little faith. Which means I had save more than $20 + less waiting time! =)

$20 might not mean alot to some people. But, remember. A dollar save is a dollar earned.

The books from Book Depository came within 2 weeks. Yeah!! =) What else can you ask for? Money save, Time save + Free shipping delivery! I'm so impressed with my 1st purchase! hee..

Now, I'm a happy boy with my 2 books.. Hee... Question is.... which book should I start 1st.. Hmmm...
P/s: I repeated Santa Claus Story for 3 whole days! The kids simply go wild when they hear the story.. Hee... I love to see their expression! Priceless.

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

How are you? I hope the global warming around the world is not melting your ice away in North Pole or Finland, wherever you are currently now with your team of reindeers.

As part of saving Gaia, I dun intend to use paper to write to you this year(anyway, I think you must have millions of letters to read and probably miss mine.) So, I think it's easier, faster and more efficient to write a post on my blog since I know you would have by now place my blog under your "Favorites". So, most probably you will be reading this soon! Yeah~!

It's less than 10 days to Christmas and I believe this year I must have enter your "Good Children List". Which means, I'll get a present from you right?! Hee...

I have been a really good boy this year.. I shared, I cared, I loved, I taught and I gave.

Good enough to enter your "Good Children List" already right? Hee.. But if you are really going to give me a present, may I request you to forgo my big big present and transform them into smaller presents so that all my children will get a present each?

These kids deserve a present from you this Christmas more than I do. Here are the reasons why they deserve a present from you....

I have witnessed so many of them work hard this year.
I have witnessed so many of them swam beyond expectations.
I have witnessed so many of them behaving themselves much better as compared to last year.
I have witnessed the determination in these children.
I have witnessed how far some of these children travelled. Some stayed in Ubi, Jurong, Tampines, Upper cross st and yet, they dun mind travelling all the way to Yio Chu Kang or Seng Kang just to learn swimming from me.
I have witnessed a boy name Jere who wants to stand, run and jump but unable to do it. He's only able to swim. And he's such a motivational to me and others.
I have witnessed these children throwing temper or shout @ me on bad days but @ the end of the day, they apologise to me saying "Teacher Jerry. I'm sorry."
I have witnessed how they bring themselves into competition and tell me. "Win or lose doesn't matter." And when they win, they gave me those credits. When they didnt win, they apologise to me. Santa, what's more important is their participation right?
I have also witnessed how tan we've become because the ozone layer has a hole and the sun ray is making us look so much darker.
I have also witnessed how they swam in the freezing cold water and the rain @ times yet, no complaints. No complaints from these kids @ all.

I am so proud of these children Santa. Of course, there are some naughty ones in my class. But, they all have a good heart Santa. Thought playful and naughty at times but they do listen to me. And I know they just want to have that bit more of my attention on them. =)

Santa, I have learnt and grew alot this year together with my children. They taught me so much about Pet Society, Maple Story, Ben 10, Bakugan, Super YoYo, Tricky Tv, OKTO, Farmville, Mousehunt and Cafe world. So much till I dunnoe which one to start with. Hee...

I might not be the best coach around. But these children that I have, they are surely the best students any coach can ask for. So, Santa, when you make your present delivery trip with your reindeers team to Singapore, dun forget to stop by my place k?

Oh! My place does not have a fire chimney for you to climb down. So maybe you might want to consider VPOST services or Fedex? They live to deliver. =)

A day spend @ KK Hospital

Ever since Rae POP, it seems that there are so much events happening that I can hardly breath. Hee.... I have so much backlogs that I must clear.. But the most important event is finally over yesterday!

Congratulations Children for passing your endurance test yesterday! You kids made it and I'm so proud of you all! I shall blog about this in a few days time. (got to clear all my backlogs 1st.. Hee...)On Wed, Rae POP. On Thurs, both of us attended "Understanding Asthma & Common Allergic Conditions in Children Workshop" over @ KK Hospital.
Our lecture notes for the day.. Lots of graphs and statisticsAsthma is a common medical disorder and 1 in every 5 school children has Asthma. Usually childhood asthma, children will grow out of it. Which is good news! =)
We touched on the importance of exercise & the doctor used "2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for American." And here are the evidence.

Exercise: - Improve cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness
-Improved bone health
-Improved cardiovascular and metabolic health biomarkers
-Favorable body composition
-Reduced symptoms of depression
Doctor also say, Children hardly exercise nowadays.(Children, u read that. You all better stop playing with facebook and maple story and swim more! Hee...) Therefore, as coaches, our training time spent with them is very valuable. These are the only time they get to exercise.
One coach asked the doctor what kind of physical activity would he recommend to a child with asthma. His answer was that it varies for different individuals and the intensity of the sport etc. However, swimming seems to be the more popular choices.
In 1996, the U.S Olympic Team, nearly 17% of the athletes had asthma and 30% of them won medals. Therefore,it is generally safe and important for children with asthma to exercise. Of course, awareness about exercise induced asthma and its management allows children with asthma to exercise safely.
Children with asthma should always bring their inhaler along with them. We got introduced into how to use the inhaler and a spacer. Of course, the inhaler we use is a placebo.Normally you use the inhaler in this manner. But, some children find it hard to hold their breath for 10sec. Hence, the effect is not there.Introducing... The spacer! When the spacer is used in between the mouth and the inhaler, children with asthma find it easier to inhale. Which is rather good.

One such spacer cost around $30. But KK hospital is willing to give these spacer to us for free! Yup. Free! So, anyone who wants a spacer for your child with asthma, pls let me know thru email @ or contact me direct @ 9100 1855.

I will consolidate the amount we need and request from the hospital.

The english version (A wall of text) =0

Okie as promised.. Here it is - The English version from The post that was blogged in Chinese.. =p

I like to watch Taiwanese drama. Hmmm, nope, I should say, I'm in love with Taiwanese drama! Hee.. To some people, Taiwanese drama might seem exaggerating and full of soapy stuff. But to me, I think most Taiwanese drama are very romantic and thoughtful.

Of course, some parts are super duper exaggerating like the actor staying in a house that looks more like a castle then a house. And they all get to travel around in fanciful cars like Ferrari, Porsche or BMW. And they are mostly super duper rich in these shows where money is not of a concern to them. Well, These are the exaggerating part.

But many a times, it's their scripts that make me tear unknowingly. Perhaps, cancerian are alittle more sensitive but, sometimes, their conversation simply just touches your heart. I guess, only those who watches such drama will understand what I'm saying. Hee...

I think the producer and director are simply very good at capturing "that moment". Be it the expression of the eyes or that simple gesture (that usually gets repeated 3 times in repeat mode). Sometimes I wonder if they have gone thru such experiences before. If not, how could they know how to capture such heart wrenching moments?

Dun you feel that every time the actor and actress did something sweet and romantic, or have to break up because of reasons they cant say it out, time seems to come to a stand still for them? And a romantic touching love songs starts to play at the background... AH.....

Sometimes, I like to imagine myself as the main lead. Hee... Abit impossible but.. at least I dare to dream! Hee... I mean, who doesn't wish himself/herself to be in a romantic sweet relationship? I also want! Hee... But, no matter how hard I try in this area, It always end up as a failure. Well,

Maybe, the problem lies with me.
Maybe, I'm not romantic or sweet enough.
Maybe, I do not know how to smooth talk.
Or maybe, Destiny has yet to arrive for me.

After meeting so many difficulties and failure on the road of relationship, sometimes you really feel like giving it all up. I can totally understand why singles like to say "It's better to be single." to their friends. Sometimes, you just feel like giving up and stop searching for "HER". But, I still believe, my destiny has yet to arrive. So, I will keep on searching for her.

Who knows, my princess might just be around the corner when I next make a turn? Hee..

And when I found her, I will say this to her. "Where have you been all this while? Sorry, I took such a long time to find you."

Think about it, I take such a long time and so much efforts to find "Her", it might be a good thing after all! Hee... Because, the harder it takes, the more I will treasure "Her". Alot of people (including my parents!) have been asking me to go to dating agencies. But I'm still quite hesitant about that...

Cause when you go to such agencies, the 1st thing they ask you is your "criteria". I dun like that. I dun like it when you set a target for your the other half. Today, he/she might meet your "criteria" but what if 1 day, he/she no longer meet your "criteria"? I might sound abit old here but I still believe in chemistry. The kind where, fire works will be created and sparks everywhere.. Hee...

Funny thing is, alot of friends @ my age are afraid of getting tied down but I'm so looking forward to marriage! Hee... I dream of setting up a family with my love one and hold my children's hand. (it must be my job. Seeing all the cute little ones everyday and they way they talked to you.. =p)

Well, like they say, it's never easy to find true love. And when I found my true love, I will make sure I protect her with all my life.

Have a sudden urge to blog this using Chinese. So, I shall do that! Hee.. Will translate this post in a few days to English. Since garmen is encouraging Chinese, well, see if you can complete reading this post in Chinese! Hee...

Therefore, This Friday lesson will be as per normal. Of course, if you are celebration Hari Raya Haji, you will be excused.

As for Sunday Classes(29 Nov 2009), we wouldnt be having swimming lesson as informed earlier because it's the 5th week of the month. So, we shall have a rest. Lesson will resume as per normal on the following sunday - 6th Dec 2009.

A day with the world class...

Am finally back home and I just cant wait to share and blog about what happen today! In conclusion... It was so exciting!

Attended "A WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE- Swimming Coaches Workshop" on Breaststroke technique by World Renowned Coach Rohan Taylor and his World Class Swimmer, Leisel Jones ( 2 Gold and 1 Silver Medallist at the 2008 Olympic Games Beijing) today.

It's the very 1st time I'm so up close with an Olympic champion and a world class coach! I think there's no better word then to use World Class here...

Rohan Taylor shared alot of insights and his views on the techniques in teaching breaststroke and also showed us the kind of drills he does with Leisel Jones.

What surprised me most was when Leisel Jones shared with us that when she was @ age 13, she was clocking 70km - 100km swim a week. That's like 2,000 laps in our 50m pool!

That's the training load of an olympic swimmer! Hmmm...Time to revisit my training program for my kids! Hee....
That's Leisel Jones, Rohan Taylor & Teacher Jerry! =) A world class combination. =pRohan Taylor explaining his drills to the swimmers...Now that Rohan Taylor has shared so much with us today, I simply cant wait to introduce the drills to my students! Of course, I have tried out the drills right after the workshop today! I have already seen the difference!

The drills practised by an Olympic Champion! I cant wait to see my kids perform! So, kids, dun miss out on ur next lesson!

Here's what we will be doing next... Streamlining, Streamlining, Streamlining... =p

Drowned teen's body found

Reference from by Sujin Thomas

THE body of a teenager was found early on Tuesday, more than 30 hours after he was last seen in the sea off East Coast Park.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it received a call at about 2.10am informing them that the body of 18-year-old Mohammed Nazim Ismail had been brought ashore.

It was his cousin, Mohammed Nazir Yusope, 25, who spotted his body bobbing in the water near where he was last seen, 20m from shore.

He jumped in to retrieve him, followed by other family members, who had been keeping vigil on the stretch of beach since Sunday evening.

Divers from the SCDF and Naval Diving Unit had by then called off their search efforts. However boats from the Police Coast Guard and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore were still patrolling the area at the time.

Mohammad Nazim was buried on Tuesday at the Lim Chu Kang Muslim cemetery following a short wake at his family's Bedok Reservoir flat which was attended by about 100 people.

Our deepest condolences.

The progress of Little Jere

Remember Little Jere story? He started swimming almost 4 months ago.. I was looking at his schedule.. And realised that he only had about 8 lessons so far, with the constant visits to the hospital and the medicine @ times that forced him to skipped some of his swimming classes...

But nevertheless, I shall make do with all the time I have with him, Nat, Gwen, Marcus and Ming Rui...

Jere progress is really amazing to me. On the 2nd lesson, he's a pilot, operating his aeroplane. By the 5th lesson, he's blowing bubbles underwater and on the latest lesson, he's already floating on his own! Well done Jere!

Look Jere's floating! Although its just a short distance float for him but it's such a great achievement for him! Photos were taken by his mummy Michele. =)

Strangely, I didn't feel so emotional when I was coaching him. But I'm feeling so proud and emotional now as I'm blogging and looking at these photos. Ah~ This boy touches people heart. Doesnt he?

For a boy who longs so much to run, walk and jump yet unable to achieve it at the moment. The only form of independent moving motion he can only achieve now is thru swimming and that's great! When he's swimming, he's no different from any other children.

Jere blow bubbles just like any other kids.
Jere floats just like any other kids.
Jere goes underwater just like any other kids.
Jere loves swimming just like any other kids.

And I know, 1 day, Little Jere will swim 1 lap of the Olympic size pool just like any other kids.

At least @ the moment, we all know, we dun need to pray for a miracle for that to happen on this talent young boy because, We believe it will happen.

The things you didn't know about Teachers till you become one

1st of all... Thank you Norin for drawing out this photo for me! =) Was chatting wif Rae and Norin over dinner on sat night when I told them "The things you didn't know about Teachers till you become one."

I wanted to write this entry for a very long time but I cant figure out the explanation part so I asked Norin if she could drew out a pic for me. And look @ her work! Woah... Exactly how I described to her! Thanks Norin! You are simply talented in drawings! =)

Now, let's start... I believe alot of teachers can relate very well to this cartoon drawing (although the cute character looks like me.. hee... =p) Teachers usually look after their students as though they are their own children.

Yes, often we have to reprimand them for the mistakes they make. We have to keep on repeating ourselves @ times to bring across a message. But, most of the time, we are always there to motivate them to move 1 more step forward. These are some of the impression people have on teachers.

But what alot of people dunnoe is the way we protect our students from "Dangers".

Alot of times, when complaints come in, when negative feedback is received on a particular student, a parent/stranger complaints the mischievous behaviour of a particular student is affecting his/her child, the principle/HOD/parents starts questioning us on the learning progress of this student, another teacher giving negative feedback on our student or perhaps bringing the class out for an excursion and complaints are being received. These, are just like the bullets in the drawing.

Without a good teacher, the students will be "hit" by these bullets. But who's always there to protect the students from getting hurt? Who else but a good teacher. Dun you agree?

A good teacher will shield and protect his students from all the negative comments so that they will have a positive environment to grow and learn. A good teacher is like a knight. Always in front of the castle protecting. Yes, we rather get hit by those bullets than to deprive the students a positive learning environment.

I received a few feedback on my recent post. Some friends say I'm crazy to be so honest writing out my feelings and yes, I might offend some parents but that's really how I feel. End of the day, I will still want my students to have a very good and strong fundamental rather than becoming "Paper chasers".

I must decalare. This blog is not meant to be commercialise (it's not my intention anyway) and I dun want it to be commercialise too. If I want a web that's commercialise, I would have fanciful display, layouts etc. I would hide away all the unglam stuff and show you only the good & fake side of Teacher Jerry and Teacher Rae.

I will @ the same time, also take away a sportsman most important virtue - Honesty.

I rather be honest with my own feelings than to put on a mask and try to be an actor and show how wonderful I can be. I want to teach my students the value of honesty. An athlete and sportsman most important spirit is in his honesty and dignity.

If today we lose a competition with honesty and dignity, we can always work hard and try it again. That's call experience.

But if today, we win a competition because we cheated and lied. Not only have we not win that competition but we have also cheated ourselves and we are going to live with that forever. That's call guilt.

If you think Teacher Jerry only teaches swimming to his students. Think again. =)

Inspirations from Mr.Weather

It's been raining the past few days... COLD COLD COLD! FREEZING!!! Monsoon season is officially here... And the past week weather (which include the thunder and lightning) gave me such an inspiration that I wrote this on my facebook..

"Objections, Rejections, Obstacles in life always seems to travel faster then success. Just like lightning always travel faster than thunder. But 1 thing u can be sure of, After the lightning(failure), there's usually a thunder sound(success) =) "

To which, one of my friends (whose currently known as Mr.Shin) replied,

"Thunder is a result of Lightning. When hot air hits cold air, it creates friction and that friction creates lightning. Since light is the fastest speed you will hear the sound of thunder much later because sound is slower than light.

You cannot have thunder without lightning and lightning without thunder. If you see lightning and you do not hear thunder you are too far away to hear it or it was not very loud.

So bro, ur absolutely right because eventually we will have success. If you still do not see success from ur failure, means ur still too far from ur accomplishments and hence no thunder. "

It's great when u have a friend/teacher who thinks the same way as u. Very often, before a person succeed, he's sure bound to face with tons of difficulties, objections. But if you take a step back and think. Without these failures, how will one really appreciate the taste of success?

Whenever Teacher Jerry met an obstacle, I always say this to myself. "I'm 1 step nearer to success because I have just met objection. Next step will be meeting Failure before I finally arrive @ success." Just like the nature of the weather. Lighting always travel faster than Thunder. Which is why, u will always see the lighting 1st before hearing the thunder. =)

Hope this small post motivates u in any objections/rejections/obstacles that u are currently facing. =)

Since When?

Since when have parents become so obsessed with certifications that they rather choose to forgo their kids fundamental skills?

Since when have parents developed this mentality that once the child pass Bronze test, that child can swim and wont drown?

Since when have parents started to use Bronze/Silver/Gold/Gold star to compare their child with other children in their progress in swimming?

Since when?

One must understand that The National Survival Swimming Award(NASSA) is a test which simulates a scenario of a sinking ship loaded with passengers and goods. The objective is to educate and train candidates to possess the knowledge and competence to overcome adversities in a genuine situation.

I'm sure alot of coaches faces the common question that I face too. But what I'm going to write here is base on my personal thoughts and feelings and does not represent anyone nor any organisation.

We are always being asked "When is my child going for the test?" and after the "test", some parents will say "I think, we will stop for awhile."

In the very 1st place, why did u want ur child to learn swimming?

Ans #1: So that my child will know how to swim and will be able to survive in water. After all, Singapore is an island surrounded by water
Ans #2: So that 1 day, he will be able to compete in a swimming race
Ans #3: So that my child can have some form of exercise and a break from studies..
Ans #4: So that I can let my child go and take the test

Did you choose #4? In that case, why have parents become so anxious about when the child is going for the test? Which is more important? The test or the fundamental of ur child swimming strokes?

As coaches, most of us will choose the latter for ur child. I would rather my kids developed a good and strong foundation in all the 4 competitive strokes and glide like a fish in the water. And 1 day being able to stand on the plunging platform getting ready to race.

Rather than to have them wear pyjamas every other lesson and tell them, "U better go for ur 100m swim now and come back in 3mins."
And when the kids ask. "Huh..3 mins. why?"
"Because, that's ur test requirement."

No no. Don't get me wrong. I'm not against sending the child for swimming test. In fact, I'm all for sending them to the survival test. All my students have to and they must go for their survival test. I know how important it is to teach such survival skills to a child.

Let's take 1 of the few important criteria in GOLD Award. It's to swim 100m in 3mins with pyjamas on. Break that up, and its 50m in 1min30secs.

As of today, Singapore National Record for 50m Under 14 Boys breaststroke is 30.53sec set by KHOO Chien Yin Lionel on 14 Mar 2009 during the 40th S'pore Nat Age Group Swim C'ships 2009.

Now, that's a champion. Let's talk about an average Joe. For example, a child @ the age of 10, if fundamentals and speed of swimming is strong. Clocking less than 60sec, shouldn't be of an issue for him. Shouldn't parents be thinking towards this direction?

I just dun understand why some parents have this mentality that they want their kids to have all the awards ASAP and keep pushing them to wear pyjamas for every lesson.. And the worst - Thinking that having a bronze award is all that they need in swimming and get the child to quit after that.

So, what if you have a bronze/silver/gold award? Take Teacher Jerry for example. So what if I am a swimming coach? So what if I am a lifeguard? It doesnt mean that I won't drown. It doesnt mean that every time I swim out at the sea, I'm not afraid of drowning.

I lost 2 friends thru drowning and that kind of pain is indescribable. Fundamental of swimming and the 4 competitive strokes should come 1st before thinking about test isnt it? NASSA test is important but having ur child to swim the correct proper strokes, isn't that more important?

Quitting after Bronze/Silver or Gold award and thinking that your child can swim really well already, its just like having a Theory Grade 1 in music and thinking that your child can play Beethoven pieces. How many times have we seen kids who have a gold award but swim with all the wrong stroking's? Too many.

End of the day, who wants that award more? The child or the parent? Since when...?

Teacher Jerry - Formal Look

This is how I will look like if I were to be working in an MNC (Multi National Company). Handsome right... Hee...

My mum loves to see her sons in uniforms like this cause she prefer to have sons whose skins are white and fair. Hee.... But too bad, her sons prefer to work under the blazing hot sun and at times in the freezing rain conditions. Hee..

Anyway, I was suppose to attend OLAM International Annual General Meeting (AGM) yesterday. And in the name of being "Hiao", I decided to wear formal and fished out Rae's suit. =p

Documents for the AGM later...And my faithful suitcase that has been with me for years...1 last shot before I leave for OLAM AGM. Ok. I admit, I'm quite vain. Hee...But hey, I dun have much chances to wear such formal suits ok. Hee... Of course must admire a little bit longer..I've completed Dr Michael Leong book on "Your 1st $1,000,000 making it in stocks". Personally, I feel its a very good book for newbies/beginners/noobs like me to get to know more on how the stock market work. If you are a newborn baby in the market just like Teacher Jerry, then I would recommend you this book to start off.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not asking you to enter the stock market. But I feel, it's an important knowledge to know how the market moves. Well, after all, the market affects our economy and lots of other stuff.

Therefore, it's important to know the basic fundamentals. There's still alot of things I need to learn from the market. But one should know @ least the basics like "Buy Low, Sell High", what factors will affect the market, be it bull or bear. And also, the importance of knowing how to read financial reports.

Investment is a knowledge and an experience that will be gained as you learn. That's why I feel, from young, parents should actually teach their children some fundamentals about investment.

Hmmm, teaching the kids how to save will be a good way to start off with! =)

P.s: Teacher Rae is booking out from camp tonight! We shall see how handsome he has become.. Hee... And ooops, he better dun find out that I wore his suit without his permission. He will kill me! =p

My solo retreat to Pulau Ubin

Warning: Super long post with lots of photos.

Everyone needs a short break/getaway/holiday every now and den. So does Teacher Jerry! =)

Now that the kids are having their exams. I finally had sometime for myself today and decided to give myself a well deserved retreat!

Destination: Pulau Ubin. It's been almost 11years since I last visited Ubin. And recently, I seem to have a lot of friends who embark on solo trips..So, I decided to try a solo trip too! Hee.. I was kinda excited about this visit. =)

The only way to get to Ubin is to take the bum boats from Changi Point Ferry Terminal.

These are the Ubin bum boats waiting at the jetty.. Usually, the boatman will only leave the jetty when there's 12 passengers. For today, he decided to just ferry me and 2 other people! Woo hoo!
On my way to Pulau Ubin!!The whole journey takes around 10 - 15mins only. Although it's just a short distance away from Singapore, but still, I'm out of the island of Singapore! The sign that welcomes you to Pulau Ubin! Oh, I've mastered the skills of self photography on this journey too! Hee...1st Stop: Nparks Information kiosk. There's 2 maps. 1 map on Pulau Ubin and another map on Chek Jawa, which was my destination for today! =) P.s: I think this photo looks very professional! Hee.. Dun you think so too?Up next: Rent a bicycle! And I got myself a Transformer Bumbler Bee.. =p $5 for 1 day.And that's all I need to begin my very own retreat - Refresh.Recharged.RelaxThe 1st beauty that I saw was Pekan Quarry. In case, you dunnoe wat's a quarry. Here's Wikipedia explanation on it.See! Told ya! I'm getting better in self photography aka cam whore. =pAnd I suddenly realised that the weather was getting very very hot...And a thought came to my mind. Can I climb up that coconut tree to get some coconuts? Hee... Coconut trees are everywhere on Pulau Ubin!Hee... Better be more realistic and bring out my 2 best defenders. Nivea Face Sun Block Whitening Cream with SPF 50 and SunPlay Sun Block with SPF 130. =DNparks have set up lots of maps like these on the island in case u go missing. Chances are rather high if you stay off the main roads... =pTalking about their roads... They have really crazy and steep roads! The roads I cycled today are one of the steepest I have ever climbed! But still, being able to cycle along the quiet roads, listening to the sound of insects, taking in the beautiful scenery and breathing in the "kampong air"... It was all worth it. I dunnoe how to describe "kampong air" to you...

It's a kind of air that you can only smell when you are in an area where the forest are so intense and there is no much vehicles around. Hmmm.. Simply - The smell of nature. =) These are how kampong looks like. These are attap houses. Their rooftops are made of zinc sheets. =) When I saw these houses, I suddenly miss my grandma kampong... =(Along the way, I saw Cookie Monster!Next, I reached Balai Quarry! The water here is so "BLUE"! Like our swimming pool water! I had an urge to dive in and swim I tell u! And it's so big! I think can swim 1 whole day no problem. Hee.. But, its illegal and dangerous to do that of course....So, just gotta make do with its beautiful scenery and a handsome coach... =pAlong the way, I saw this doggie sleeping on the roadside. The time was around 9.30am. Remember this dog.And I'm reaching Chek Jawa soon!!Finally I reached... After climbing dunnoe how many steep slopes...This pair of good legs are going to bring me to explore Chek Jawa! =) I love them!Might as well take a photo too... Hee...Once in Chek Jawa, I encountered a Komodo Dragon! Really big! Kinda got freaked out by it! Hee....This is Jejawi Tower and its 20m tall! I'm going to conquer it! I made it to the top! Tiring of course! But still, I remember to take a photo! HeeThe view from top.. I see rain coming...This is call Nipah. It's seed are what I love to eat. Called "Attap Chee" =) Mangroves on Chek Jawa... Impressive site.I'm on the coastal boardwalk. It's a super duper long bridge where supposingly you can see lots of marine lifes during low tide. =) Taking 1 more photo before I seek shelter from the rain.. Hee..Rain came and I had to seek shelter! As I was just looking down @ my feet. I saw something super duper amazing.Millions of small fishes were swimming right below me! Instantly I feel like I'm in Maldives! Wahaha... Simple things like these makes me super happy. Hee...The rain came. The best companion is the book that I'm reading on now. "Your First $1,000,000 Making It In Stocks" by Dr Michael Leong.

Reading my favourite book, with the rain breeze, cooling weather, enjoying the peacefulness of the area and the occasional fly past of aeroplanes. I said to myself “啊。。幸福啊。”Luckily, the rain didnt last too long. Before I leave my shelter, I decided to take a photo again. Hee..And the moment I leave the shelter, I saw the komodo dragon again! This time it's swimming! This is House No.1. No, it's not a haunted house. The unique feature of this house is its fireplace. Base on the brochure, it's the only working fireplace in Singapore. And this house has been converted into a visitor center.I must admit... I was shocked to see such a big house exist! On my way back to the Jetty, I saw that doggie again! This time, it changed position. Instead of sleeping by the roadside, it's sleeping in the middle of the road! Time was 12.45pm. Win liao... And what's a Ubin trip without ending it with a cold sweet coconut drink! Hee.. =)I'm a happy little boy with his coconut.I think this man is the village head. Because when I was @ the jetty, I heard the boatman calling him “村长”I truly enjoyed myself for this solo retreat. Now I understand why so many of my friends like to go on solo trips. You can do things at your own pace, decide on which routes you want to take.

Even if its a wrong path, no one will blame you.. You only got to answer to yourself. Reflect on your thoughts without being afraid of being interrupted. And most importantly, you get to enjoy the peace and quietness around you.

The moment I started cycling on Pulau Ubin today, I found myself slowing my pace down, listening to the sound of insects and breathing in the air that's long lost since I moved away from kampong... It's simple things like these that bring back lots of memories and refresh my mind..

Now I'm all recharged and ready to face all the challenges that's ahead of me! Hee... Really glad that I went for this trip.

I'm so refreshed now! =)

I will recommend Pulau Ubin to those who wish to have a short escape from Singapore... I spend 5hours on Pulau Ubin and I felt it was a great retreat! Anyway, the bum boat tickets are cheap. $2.50 per trip. Not that expensive for a short retreat. =)

When was the last time you visited Ubin? For me, it was 11 years ago. Hee...
